Rally against USPS privatization at Burien Staples on April 10

stop-staples-frontSEATTLE (April 8, 2014) — Staples and the U.S. Postal Service have cut a deal that jeopardizes Americans’ mail service and all local post offices — along with thousands of good jobs.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has begun replacing full-service U.S. Post Offices with knock-off post offices in Staples stores that are not staffed with USPS employees. By contracting out retail postal window services to the nation’s largest office supply chain, the USPS is replacing living-wage unionized postal jobs with low-paid, low-benefit, non-unionized jobs.

This is a bad deal for workers and consumers.

TAKE A STAND! — Bring your co-workers, friends and family to join USPS employees as they STAND AGAINST STAPLES on Thursday, April 10 from 2 to 3 p.m. (rain or shine) at the Staples store at 158 S.W. 148th St. in Burien. For more information, download the rally flier or RSVP with the American Postal Workers Union Greater Area Seattle Local at 206-241-6038. Also, sign the petition at StopStaples.com.

Americans have always had post offices staffed by workers who are accountable to them; highly trained, uniformed Postal Service employees sworn to safeguard the mail. Those jobs — whether at Post Offices or at Staples — should be protected by a union contract, and staffed by trained postal workers who are sworn to uphold the sanctity of the mail.
