2-for-2: Hundreds of nurses unite with SEIU 1199NW

16-Apr11-SEIU1199-ProvidenceSEATTLE (April 12, 2016) — About 200 hospice and home health nurses at Providence Home Health and Hospice of Snohomish County voted overwhelmingly to unite in SEIU Healthcare 1199NW.  Caregivers made their choice clear with a 135 to 31 vote to form their union and stand up for better patient care.

“This is a step toward a better future for us, our patients, and our families,” said April Frazier, the Chaplain.  “I think the Sisters of Providence would be proud of our advocacy.”

The vote comes one week after 180 respiratory care practitioners, licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants, dietary workers, housekeepers and other hospital workers at Kindred Hospitals at Northgate and First Hill voted overwhelmingly to unite in SEIU Healthcare 1199NW.

The Providence nurses cite growing caseloads and concern about a more corporate shift in the agency.  Providence Home Health and Hospice is part of a 5-state chain of hospitals and health providers.

“Forming our union will benefit our patients,” remarked Amber Back, a Hospice Nurse.  “In negotiations, we will stand up for lower caseloads so patients get the quality time and care they deserve.”

Next members of the newly-formed union will determine their priorities for bargaining and elect a bargaining team.  Negotiations on a first contract will follow.

SEIU Healthcare 1199NW is 28,000 nurses, healthcare workers, and mental health workers throughout Washington state united to improve our jobs, our communities, and the care we give.
