Participate in May Day events on Sunday

Celebrate International Workers’ Day in Seattle, Aberdeen, Mount Vernon, Olympia, Yakima

 

For decades, organized labor has joined immigrant rights and community activists to celebrate “May Day,” or International Workers’ Day, on May 1 at events and marches that call for stronger workers’ and immigrants’ rights. All union members and community supporters are encouraged to participate in these events — and wear your union colors!

SEATTLE — Trade unionists will be joining El Comité and the May 1st Action Coalition at the May 1st March and Rally on Sunday, May 1 starting at 1 p.m. at Judkins Park, 20th Pl. S. & S. Dearborn St. in Seattle. Among the co-sponsors of this event are MLK Labor, Puget Sound Advocates for Retirement Action, UFCW 3000, and the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

ABERDEEN — All are invited to the May Day Working Families Picnic from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 1 at Bishop Athletic Complex in Aberdeen, Wash. Join Firelands for food, fun and community. Get details.

MOUNT VERNON — Be in solidarity with farm workers in Whatcom and Skagit counties, including the tulip workers who just joined together to win protections! Join Familias Unidas por la Justicia and Community to Community Development at Marcha Campesina on Sunday, May 1. Gather at 9 a.m. at Edgewater Park, 600 Behrens Millett Road in Mount Vernon, and the march begins at 10 a.m. (through Burlington and Mt. Vernon, approx. 4 miles). The march ends at Skagit River Park, 1720 E Whitmarsh Road, for a food and community celebration.

OLYMPIA — The Washington Federation of State Employees/AFSCME Council 28 will host its members, staff and their families at its Olympia headquarters, 1212 Jefferson St SE, for its May Day celebration to build solidarity among state employees. This event is for WFSE members and staff only. Participants will come together from noon to 2 p.m. to enjoy some fresh air and food together as we honor our labor movement history. RSVP here. Recommended parking: Please park near WFSE Headquarters on the street, or across Jefferson St SE at the Department of Natural Resources.

YAKIMA — The Fair Work Center and OneAmerica will host a May Day celebration of immigrant workers in the Yakima Valley on Sunday, May 1 from 2 to 6 p.m. at 507 W. Chestnut Ave. in Yakima. It will feature food, music and community. Get details.
