Marlene’s workers to rally in Tacoma

The unionized workers at the beloved natural food store are ramping up the pressure on management to negotiate a fair contract

TACOMA, WA (September 17, 2025) — After winning their union in February, the workers at Marlene’s Market & Deli in Tacoma have worked hard to secure a first contract. But despite months at the table, the employer has yet to agree to essential provisions in the contract, stalling negotiations. Workers at Marlene’s, fellow members of their union, UFCW Local 367, and supporters will rally today at the Tacoma store to escalate their fight for a fair contract.

In August, the union reported that talks reached an impasse over key issues like paid time off, scheduling, seniority language, and a lengthy management rights clause in the contract. Currently, the company gives the workers little time off and also combines sick leave with vacation time. Workers are pushing for a reasonable PTO bank, ensuring they can take leave to care for their health when needed and not sacrifice time off with their families.

Securing a first contract after successfully organizing is notoriously difficult, resulting in delays that benefit the employer at the expense of workers; without a contract, working conditions largely remain as they were before the union organizing campaign. A recent study put the average time from union recognition to a first contract at 465 days. Labor laws largely favor the employer in this regard, making community pressure in support of the workers all the more essential.

With little movement in recent months, workers are calling on supporters to join their calls for the company to negotiate in good faith.

TAKE A STAND: Rally with Marlene’s workers and supporters TODAY at 3:00 p.m. at Marlene’s Market & Deli in Tacoma (2951 S 38th St, Tacoma, WA 98409). Supporters can also sign the workers’ petition to Marlene’s management urging the company to bargain in good faith.
