Tell the NYT: Stop being ‘heartless’
Times Tech Guild calls on New York Times management to reverse denial of remote work accommodation for engineer caring for his seriously ill father
NEW YORK, NY (March 13, 2026) — If you’re a faithful reader of The STAND’s daily news roundup, you know how often news of working people is found in the pages of the New York Times. Now, workers at the Times represented by the New York Times Tech Guild — part of the NewsGuild of New York, CWA — are asking for community support for a member, Rich Quan, who is being denied remote work accommodation that he needs in order to care for father.
The Times Tech Guild represents hundreds of workers at the NYT. They ratified their first contract in late 2024, after more than two years of bargaining and a weeklong strike during Election Day that year. That contract provides for the remote work accommodation Quan is seeking, as his father is seriously ill with Alzheimer’s. Yet management is refusing to budge.

From the New York Times Tech Guild:
Rich Quan, an engineer at The New York Times and a member of the Tech Guild, is a certified caregiver for his 96-year-old father, who is in an advanced stage of Alzheimer’s Disease. He provides vital daily care for his father while at the same time working efficiently out of his home.
Under the Tech Guild contract, members can request remote work in certain circumstances including caregiving. Despite that contract clause and Rich’s demonstrated ability to be an efficient remote worker, Times management has directed him to return to the office and unilaterally denied his appeal.
His father is seriously ill. Times management can give Rich the accommodation he needs but they’re choosing not to.
Stand with the Tech Guild and urge management to reconsider and grant Rich a remote work accommodation, ensuring he can continue to contribute his talents to this institution without compromising the safety and health of his family.
TAKE A STAND: sign the workers’ petition to NYT Chief Technology Officer Jason Sobel in solidarity with Quan and the Tech Guild.
The @nytimes is denying one of our @NYTGuildTech members the ability to continue working remotely. He provides vital daily care to his 96-year-old father who has advanced Alzheimer’s. Tell The Times to stop being heartless and sign the petition! https://t.co/JccNFeXRFI pic.twitter.com/REkw1kicKA
