Pierce CLC declares May ‘Hunger Action Month’

Pierce County’s largest labor organization is calling for collective action to support working families

The following is from the Pierce County CLC:

TACOMA, WA (April 13, 2026) –The Pierce County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO (PCCLC) announces the adoption of a resolution declaring May 2026 as Hunger Action Month, affirming labor’s commitment to support the health, stability, and well-being of working families across Pierce County.

Organized labor has long recognized that its responsibility extends beyond the workplace. Strong unions are rooted in strong communities, and advancing the well-being of working people requires active engagement in ensuring access to basic needs—including food, housing, healthcare, and social services for all.

At a time when working families are facing deep and growing hardship, with the rising cost of food, fuel, and housing far outpacing wages, too many neighbors are struggling to put food on the table despite working full-time or more. In response, PCCLC is mobilizing its members, resources, and solidarity to meet urgent needs and demonstrate what collective action looks like in practice.

A Different Kind of May Day

In the spirit of May Day, the Council is taking a community-centered approach. Rather than hosting a traditional May Day rally, PCCLC and its affiliates will participate in direct action throughout the entire month of May.

This approach reflects a deliberate choice: to meet the moment with tangible support for working families across Pierce County.

Key Actions

As part of Hunger Action Month, PCCLC will engage in coordinated efforts including:

  • Participation in the Emergency Food Network Hunger Walk on May 2, 2026. Sign up to join the team to walk or fundraise.
  • Support for the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on May 9, 2026
  • Donating to IBEW Local 483’s Peanut Butter Drive before May 15th

Call to Action

PCCLC calls on all affiliated unions, community partners, and friends of labor to join in this collective effort by participating in organized events, contributing to local food access programs such as Emergency Food Network, and taking action throughout May to support working families.
