Join the ‘United to Stop Online Scams’ day of action

The following is from the Washington State Alliance for Retired Americans:

(September 16, 2026) — Social media platforms aren’t just where scams show up – they’re where scams start. Fake profiles, direct messages, recommendation algorithms, and ad targeting give bad actors everything they need to impersonate loved ones, officials, and romantic partners at massive scale. 

These aren’t edge-cases – many of us have either been scammed ourselves, or know someone who has been scammed through platforms like Meta. And with AI, it’s getting harder to tell what’s real and what’s fake! 

That’s why a coalition of civil society groups, including the Alliance for Retired Americans, are organizing a National Day of Action. Through a virtual webinar, the day of action will give folks an opportunity to take action together and learn how to stop online scams and frauds. Will you join us?

Nearly 30% of people who lost money to a scam last year said it started on social media, totaling $2.1 billion in reported losses. 

Tech companies like Meta can solve this problem, but their execs won’t budge unless they see that people all over the world are demanding action.

That’s why we’re launching a National Day of Action to demand that platforms stop profiting off scams and start building real safeguards: faster takedowns, accessible reporting, and accountability for repeat offenders.
