Labor films, WSLC’s Johnson at Skagit festival on March 29

MOUNT VERNON — The Skagit Human Rights Festival has invited representatives of organized labor to give a two-hour presentation at the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, one of four Thursday evenings dedicated to exploring national and international issues that impact people of Skagit Valley.

Two short labor films will be shown — We are the ILWU and Eyes on the Fries. The first film recognizes that a decent job, free of discrimination, is a human right and that unity is the key to social and economic justice for all. The second film is about the service sector economy and the young people who work in it — the McJob economy.

The evening will also feature keynote speaker Jeff Johnson, President of the Washington State Labor Council, discussing how unions continue to champion the rights of all workers, organized or not. In addition, there will be a panel of young activists, including Anita Nath of the Puget Sound Alliance for Retired Americans, Alex Stone of the Economic Opportunity Institute and WA Yell (Washington Young Emerging Labor Leaders), and Kamaria Hightower of the WSLC and WA YELL.

The event is free and open to the public. Click here for more information, including a list of the other Skagit Human Rights Festival events planned on Thursdays in March. (Download the SHRF poster.)

The March 29 labor event is being organized by the Labor-Democrat Work Group, a new and energetic pro-worker, pro-union group in Northwest Washington. For more info about the group, email Rich Austin.
