WSLC: Our Walmart deserves credit for long-overdue raises

johnson-jeff-13OLYMPIA (Feb. 20, 2015) — The following statement was issued today by Jeff Johnson, President of the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO:

I want to recognize the courage, bravery and tenacity of the workers and community members of “Our Walmart” who have forced the Walmart Corporation to raise wages to $9 an hour this April, to $10 next year and to provide first day sick leave coverage.

These changes did not come about because of the benevolence of the company but because these brave workers and their community allies spoke truth to power and created these first step positive changes. The fight for $15 an hour, full-time work, quality health care coverage and retirement security will continue. We will be with “Our Walmart” every step of the way.
