Trumka on Census exclusion: Every human being counts

The following is from the AFL-CIO:

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 22, 2020) — In response to the Trump administration’s decision to exclude undocumented immigrants from being counted in the U.S. Census for congressional seats, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka issued the following statement:

Today’s announcement flies in the face of our national values and betrays the fundamental truth that we should honor every human being who lives and works in America. Once more, this administration has actively moved to create hatred and division at a time when our country is crying out for unity and justice. This memo is not only unconstitutional, it is a direct attack on the fabric of our nation and our core democratic institutions.

Every person counts. Period. It is that simple. We are all brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, neighbors, co-workers, members of a community. We all contribute to America, regardless of our place of birth, race or immigration status. There is no distinction among human beings. An attack against one of us is an attack against all of us. This announcement only will energize our efforts to defeat Donald Trump and everyone who would embrace his politics of hate. The 2020 census is vital to working families. Despite the obstacles this memo presents, we remain committed to do our part to ensure a fair and accurate count of every human being.
