STATE GOVERNMENT

Washington state legislators need to hear YOUR priorities

As state lawmakers go remote, they need to hear from working people across Washington about their experiences and concerns. Share your story!

OLYMPIA (Dec. 10, 2020) — The Washington State Legislature will convene in person Jan. 11 and then lawmakers plan to conduct the rest of the 2021 session remotely amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As legislators make the critical decisions about how our state government should respond to this ongoing health and economic crisis, plus other pressing challenges facing Washington’s working families, they need to hear from YOU.

The Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO and its affiliated unions are urging all union members and other working people across the state to share their experiences, concerns and priorities for the 2021 legislative session. Click here to fill out a form sharing your story and thoughts. The WSLC will work to make sure that your perspectives are heard by all state lawmakers as they conduct legislative business remotely.

●  Have you lost your job during COVID-19 and struggled to navigate the state unemployment insurance system?  Share your story.

●  Has your employer failed to pay your proper wages, or denied your mandatory sick leave or otherwise violated your rights, but the state Department of Labor and Industries has been unable to help you?  Share your story.

●  Are you a state employee — or someone who relies on the essential public services they provide — who is concerned about the drastic budget cuts some are proposing?  Share your story.

●  With remote learning in our schools, has the lack of affordable child care kept you from returning to work or cost you your job?  Share your story.

●  Are you concerned about police accountability, or crumbling bridges and infrastructure, or housing affordability or anything else, and you have a personal experience to share on the subject?  Share your story.

The personal stories of Washington citizens often make the most compelling case for pro-worker legislation. If you want to keep your full name private, you can. But your experiences and your concerns are absolutely necessary to help legislators understand what is important.

In normal times, our elected representatives would hear from their constituents face-to-face at personal meetings, committee hearings, or at State Capitol rallies and demonstrations. But these aren’t normal times. Please take some time now or over the holidays to share your story.

If you have any questions about this effort to ensure Washington’s working families are heard during the remote 2021 legislative session, email the WSLC’s David Groves.
