Multiple virtual events to celebrate MLK Day
With the surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations caused by the Omicron variant, many but not all events and activities honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. this weekend and during MLK Day on Monday, Jan. 17 will be held virtually. Here are some MLK Day events that may be of interest to union members and community supporters. Check your local newspaper/news outlets for additional events in your area.
SUNDAY and MONDAY — The 2022 AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil and Human Rights Conference: Honoring Our Past and Protecting Our Future will take place on Jan. 16-17. The registration fee is $50. Speakers will include Vice President Kamala Harris, Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, Judge Greg Mathis, actors Michael B. Jordan, Blair Underwood, Ruth Negga, Mykelti Williamson and Colman Domingo. Musicians Yolanda Adams, Tom Morello, PJ Morton and Brittney Spencer will perform. Get details and register.
TODAY through MONDAY — Under the theme, “Truth in Education Now,” the Seattle MLK Jr. Organizing Coalition, an all-volunteer organization composed of grassroots, labor, business, people of color, and progressive community organizations and volunteers from throughout the Puget Sound region, has planned a virtual youth event, job fair and resume review, and workshops. A socially distanced outdoor rally and march will be held Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting at Seattle’s Garfield High School. (See the events poster or seattlemlkcoalition.org for details.)
MONDAY — “To the Promised Land: An Exploration of the Life of Martin Luther King, Jr.” — A free online presentation at 1 p.m. exploring the life and civil rights struggles of Dr. King by Professor Michael Honey of the University of Washington. He is the author of two books on Dr. King, To the Promised Land and Going Down Jericho Road. Get details and register.
