Week of MLK events to focus on ‘Truth in Education Now!’

“Labor Solidarity Across Communities of Color” virtual workshop on Jan. 11

SEATTLE (Jan. 7, 2022) — The Seattle MLK Jr. Organizing Coalition, an all-volunteer organization composed of grassroots, labor, business, people of color, and progressive community organizations and volunteers from throughout the Puget Sound region, has a jam-packed week of activities leading up to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 17.

Under the theme, “Truth in Education Now,” a virtual youth event, job fair and resume review, workshops, and a socially distanced outdoor rally and march from Seattle’s Garfield High School are all planned. (See the events poster or seattlemlkcoalition.org for details.)

One highlight will be the virtual workshop “Labor Solidarity Across Communities of Color” on Tuesday, Jan. 11 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Register here to attend.

With “Striketober” and other labor militancy, how will workers of color be better represented in the labor movement? The issues of communities of color are inseparable from the concerns of workers of color. At this workshop, learn how constituencies of color are working together to advance our common interests. The panel of presenters will be:

● Kevin Allen, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and Executive Board Member, AFSCME Council 28

● Eunice How, President of Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA Seattle) and Community Organizer, UNITE HERE Local 8

● Cherika Carter, President of Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU Puget Sound) and Political and Strategic Campaigns Director, WA State Labor Council AFL-CIO

● Indira Trejo, President of Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA Pacific Northwest) and Campaign Director, UFCW Local 21

● Tracy Lai, Vice President of APALA Seattle and Co-Secretary for the Executive Board of Seattle Community Colleges Federation of Teachers

● Amy Leung, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, Organizer

● Kasi Perreira, Director of Racial and Gender Justice, WA State Labor Council AFL-CIO
