Workers secure benefits as mill closes

McKinley Paper Mill announced a permanent closure, paving the way for workers to receive full benefits

PORT ANGELES, WA (August 25) – Members of the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers (AWPPW) and McKinley Paper Mill in Port Angeles have reached an agreement that will make benefits available to the workers amid the mill’s closure.

On August 19, McKinley Paper Mill officially announced the permanent closure of the Port Angeles facility, a move specifically intended to trigger the benefits outlined in Section 34 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. A temporary closure would not trigger these benefits; the company’s decision to announce a permanent closure ensures that all eligible employees will receive the full range of benefits they are entitled to, including extended medical coverage and severance.

“This is a difficult moment for our community, but it’s also a victory for our members,” said John Fox, President of AWPPW Local 155. “McKinley’s decision to honor the contract and provide full transparency is exactly what we have been asking for. It gives our members the security they need during this transition and shows a commitment to doing the right thing.”

As part of the agreement, McKinley Paper Mill has committed to covering the full cost of medical benefits for eligible employees—both the employer and employee portions of the premiums—during this period of transition. Additionally, they have agreed to extend the call-back rights for all employees to 18 months, providing a critical safeguard for workers who hope to return to their jobs if the mill reopens in the future. The company has also committed to giving a 30-day notice for any changes to the skeleton crew that will remain to maintain the site.

“While it’s incredibly tough to see this mill close, McKinley has taken meaningful steps to support our members through this process,” said Nathan Babcock, Standing Committee Chair. “Their agreement to cover the full cost of medical benefits and extend call-back rights is a strong gesture of support, and we appreciate their willingness to engage in good-faith negotiations.”

The AWPPW Bargaining Team worked diligently to ensure that the needs and concerns of the workers were addressed, emphasizing the need for clarity from the company as workers face the upheaval of impending job loss. This decision allows the community and the workers to plan for the future, even as they navigate the challenges of the present.

“McKinley’s decision to permanently close the mill is not just about shutting down operations; it’s about honoring their commitments and providing the transparency we demanded,” said Bill Sauters, AWPPW Area Representative. “This outcome, while challenging, is a positive step that ensures our members receive the benefits they have worked so hard for.”

The union acknowledges the significant impact this closure will have on the Port Angeles community but remains hopeful for the future.

“We know this is a difficult time for everyone involved, but McKinley’s actions today show that they are willing to support their employees and the community in a meaningful way,” said Josh Estes, AWPPW Spokesperson. “While the closure is a hard reality to face, we’re grateful that McKinley has chosen to provide the clarity and support we’ve asked for. There’s still hope that one day, the mill may reopen and continue to be a vital part of Port Angeles.”

As the community of Port Angeles faces the aftermath of this closure, the AWPPW says it is committed to continuing to stand by its members, ensuring that they receive the support and benefits they deserve.
