Celebrate labor studies with Harry Bridges Center
SEATTLE, WA (October 22, 2024) — The UW Harry Bridges Center’s annual Labor Studies Awards Celebration returns Sunday, November 10. All are invited to this joyous event recognizing the achievements of Bridges Center students and faculty and sharing the Center’s work for the coming year.
This year’s celebration will be Sunday, November 10, from 5 PM to 8 PM in the Husky Union Building Ballroom at the University of Washington, Seattle campus. The event is free and open to the public, with dinner and drinks provided.
The Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies, a full-fledged program dedicated to labor education and research, grew out of the Harry Bridges Endowed Chair in Labor Studies, established in 1992 in memory of the legendary founding president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, funded by a grassroots effort of one thousand union members giving $1,000 each. Now, some thirty years later, hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in labor classes, awarded scholarships and research grants, and are provided hands-on experiences in the labor movement through student internships.
This event is a fantastic opportunity to dive deeper into this unique resource in Washington, celebrate student achievements as scholars and activists, learn about the latest labor research, labor issues, and campaigns, honor the contributions of labor activists, past and present, and join in community with workers, students, and faculty of all ages.
It’s also an opportunity to learn about incredible resources like the Labor Archives of Washington, and the Building a Movement Labor Internship, a unique program from the Bridges Center placing students in unions and labor organizations to learn hands-on skills. This internship program, although relatively new, is a powerful opportunity for students to learn about their rights, to build basic organizing skills, and to take the lessons they learn back to their communities and fellow students and fight for positive change. (To learn more, read Amrine White, the WSLC’s 2022 BAM intern, sharing her experience in The STAND).
Space is limited, and tickets are required. Early registration is encouraged! Registration, directions, and parking information are available here: labor.uw.edu/celebration.
