STATE GOVERNMENT
Local jobs, not corporate interests
Call center workers are advocating for legislation to prioritize local jobs and hold corporations accountable
OLYMPIA, WA (January 31, 2025) — Offshoring jobs rips stability away from local communities. This legislative session, Call Center workers organized with Communications Workers of America (CWA) are pushing for accountability for companies that move jobs overseas while simultaneously seeking subsidies like tax breaks from local communities.
The concept is straightforward; SB 5459, would make companies ineligible for taxpayer-funded support if they move jobs overseas. Rather, financial assistance, such as grants, loans, tax benefits, and contracts, would stay with companies that support local jobs.
There are about 49,000 call center workers in Washington State. The CWA, which represents some of these workers, reports that call center closures and offshoring jobs have cost hundreds of workers their livelihoods in recent years.
The workers are calling on all labor supporters to sign-in PRO on SB 5459 today in solidarity, in advance of a hearing in the Senate Committee on Labor & Commerce scheduled for Monday, February 3 at 10:30am.
