Union victory at Marlene’s Market & Deli

Employees at the Tacoma grocery store are now organized with UFCW Local 367

TACOMA, WA (Updated February 25, 2025) — Workers at Marlene’s Market & Deli in Tacoma won their union election Friday to become the newest members of UFCW 367, per a post from the union on Facebook.

“We’re proud to welcome them into the UFCW 367 family and will stand with them every step of the way as they fight for a strong first contract!” said the union.

The workers began organizing after new Marlene’s ownership made numerous, concerning changes to working conditions, including reduced store hours and decreased paid time off.

TACOMA, WA (February 10, 2025) — The employees of Marlene’s Market & Deli in Tacoma officially filed for a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election to be represented by UFCW Local 367 last week. Workers chose to organize to secure better working conditions, fair wages, and a stronger voice in their workplace.

Organizing was spurred by the acquisition of Marlene’s Market & Deli by Lassen’s Natural Foods & Vitamins. Marlene’s is a beloved local institution known for its commitment to organic and natural foods; while Lassen’s, a California chain, promises to maintain the store’s name and staffing, the acquisition has raised concerns among employees and the community.

Per the union, workers contacted UFCW Local 367 after experiencing numerous changes implemented by Lassen’s, including reduced store hours, decreased paid time off, eliminated holiday pay, and changes to healthcare benefits. The union also reports that workers have received very poor communication, lack of support, and inadequate training on new systems introduced by Lassen’s.

Standing together in solidarity under the banner “We Are Marlene’s,” these workers are determined to reclaim their workplace and ensure it remains a place of respect, integrity, and dignity. In a statement, UFCW Local 367 called the workers’ filing for an NLRB election a testament to the employees’ determination to uphold the values that Marlene’s has long represented in the community.

“I’ve enjoyed working at Marlenes and have the upmost respect for everyone that works and shops there” said Monica Poole, 10-year employee at Marlenes. “We are joining UFCW 367 because we need a strong voice and deserve livable wages, and affordable quality healthcare.”
