Letter carriers fight for USPS and a fair contract

Amidst fears of Trump administration attacks on the U.S. Postal Service, NALC letter carriers are calling on supporters to join them as they rally to defend USPS and secure a fair contract

SEATTLE, WA (Updated March 21, 2025) — National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) members will rally in Washington and across the U.S. on March 23, mobilizing against any attempt to dismantle or privatize the U.S. Postal Service, and to escalate their fight for a contract.

“The American public deserves good service and Letter Carriers deserve a fair contract,” said Kevin Gottlieb, said NALC Branch 79 President announcing a rally in Seattle.

A full list of actions planned in Washington State can be found at NALC.org and at the end of this article.

Privatizing the postal service, or restructuring it to maximize profits not quality service, would deprive communities of an affordable, reliable service. That loss would be felt most acutely in rural areas, where private companies rarely operate; they’d need to charge an exorbitant amount in order to turn a profit. Meanwhile, USPS remains one of the most affordable ways to send mail and packages, and many communities rely on postal workers for medication and essential supplies, not to mention letters from loved ones.

At the same time, NALC-represented letter carriers who are a lifeline for communities across the U.S. are fighting for a fair contract. Postal workers are facing a significant uptick in workload since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and are fighting for a contract that recognizes that increased labor and the sharp rise in the cost of living since the last contract was negotiated. Members rejected a tentative contract in January by 71%. The previous contract expired in May of 2023.
