ELECTION
Labor hits the streets for democracy
Opportunities to put the power of democracy and working people’s voices into action around the Puget Sound this weekend
TACOMA, WA (October 16, 2025) — Thousands will join No Kings protests across Washington on Saturday, decrying authoritarianism and exercising the rights to free speech and assembly that are vital to our democracy. Along with these events, labor is also taking part in direct action to engage more working people in the upcoming election. The union vote is powerful; union members are more likely to vote in elections than not-yet-unionized workers, and union members and labor unions are trusted messengers in local communities. So with ballots dropping in mailboxes this week, union members are coming together around the Puget Sound to help get out that pro-worker vote.
Pierce County
The Pierce County Central Labor Council is leading a canvass for labor-endorsed candidates as part of Pierce County Democracy Day on October 18. Held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., attendees are encouraged to join for some boots-on-the-ground activism getting out the pro-worker vote, then head to local No Kings protests to rally with community. RSVP online for the PCCLC canvass.
King & Kitsap Counties
There are two opportunities to join a WSLC canvass and knock doors with fellow union members: in support of State Rep. Edwin Obras on Saturday, October 18 at 11:00 a.m. in Kent, and in support of State Sen. Deb Krishnadasan on Sunday, October 19 at 11:00 a.m. in Bremerton. Obras and Krishnadasan are running in special legislative races, hoping to retain seats they were appointed into. Both are strong advocates dedicated to improving the lives of working people; Obras led on a bill this past session to protect isolated workers like security guards and parking attendants, and Krishnadasan built the bipartisan relationships needed to successfully pass six bills in her first ever session. RSVP online to help get out the vote for these candidates.
MLK Labor is also hosting a canvass in support of labor-endorsed candidates in the City of Seattle on Sunday, October 19 at 11:00 a.m. To join that walk, meet at City View Park, 1101 Harbor Ave SW, Seattle. A list of MLK Labor endorsed candidates is available online.
