WSU Postdocs win first contract

An overwhelmingly majority voted to ratify a first contract locking in wage increases and stronger workplace protections

PULLMAN, WA (April 16, 2026) — Postdoctoral Scholars at Washington State University (WSU) secured a first contract with the university at the beginning of April, a victory in their fight to secure better wages, working conditions, and a voice on the job. Workers voted by 99% to ratify the contract, per WSU-PDU/UAW.

“We are thrilled to have won our first contract, which will improve pay, job security, protections against harassment and abusive conduct, and more for Postdocs at WSU,” said Brianna Steiert, a Postdoc in Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology at WSU and a member of the bargaining committee. “Bringing working conditions at WSU in line with peer institutions ensures that WSU remains competitive, and allows Postdocs here to focus on the research we do advancing science, health, and knowledge for communities locally and beyond.”

In a news release, UAW shared contract highlights, including:

  • New minimum salary: For the first time, WSU will have a Postdoc minimum salary of $62,232 (in line with the NIH recommended minimum). All Postdocs will receive a raise, with many getting raises of 7-27%.

  • New rights and protections for international scholars: including visa fee reimbursement, guaranteed paid leave for visa/immigration appointments, and protections against illegal ICE activity on campus.

  • Effective protections against discrimination, harassment and bullying: including immediate and supportive measures and an enforceable grievance process for pursuing complaints.

  • Job security improvements: including “just cause” protections against unjust discipline or dismissal, and longer minimum appointments.

“Postdocs power WSU research and instruction, but for far too long, their rights, pay and benefits lagged behind other major research universities,” said UAW Region 6 Director Mike Miller. “Through the power of their collective action, WSU Postdocs won a strong first contract that raises pay significantly, sets new standards for international scholars’ rights, and will make the university more inclusive and equitable. This campaign is part of a wave of Postdoc organizing and will be an inspiration to many more to follow.”

Postdocs are just one of the units of organized workers on the WSU campus. Academic Student Employees secured a first contract in 2024, just hours into a strike. Nationwide, the UAW represents more than 120,000 higher education workers.
