Human rights events held in Everett, SeaTac, Seattle

UPDATE (Dec. 11, 2012) — More than 60 people attended Monday night’s candlelight vigil in downtown Seattle on International Human Rights Day to urge Washington’s congressional delegation to say “no” to any cuts in benefits to Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, and to end tax cuts to the richest 2%.

The event — organized by the Washington State Labor Council, M.L. King Jr. County Labor Council, Casa Latina, Washington State Alliance for Retired Americans, and Faith Action Network — was emceed by MLKCLC Political Director Dianne Gross and featured remarks from MLKCLC President Jessica Bonebright, WSLC President Jeff Johnson,  IAM Western Region General Vice President Gary Allen, and Washington State Alliance for Retired Americans President Mike Warren.

Juan Martinez of U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott’s office read a message from the Congressman thanking attendees and encouraging them to keep the pressure on Washington, D.C. — no cuts to our safety net!


(Dec. 5, 2012) — Puget Sound-area working families will gather on Monday, Dec. 10 to commemorate International Human Rights Day. In Everett, they will renew calls for basic human rights across the globe; in SeaTac, they will urge that basic human rights extend to all workers at Sea-Tac International Airport; and in Seattle, they will ask Washington’s congressional delegation to oppose benefit cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.

All union members and community supporters are invited to attend one or more of the following events on Monday:

EVERETT — The Snohomish County Commission on Human Rights invites all to join Machinist union (IAM) General Vice President Gary Allen, state Rep. Marko Liias (D-Mukilteo) and Snohomish County Prosecutor Mark Roe in an observance of International Human Rights Day from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the first floor public meeting rooms of the Robert Drewel Building on the Snohomish County Campus, 3000 Rockefeller in Everett. SEATAC — A group of unions will gather at 1:45 p.m. at the Sea-Tac Airport’s light rail station to stand up for human rights of airport workers. Working Washington, a coalition of labor and community organizations, is calling on the Port of Seattle and the major airlines like Alaska that do business at Sea-Tac Airport to respect the basic human rights of all workers. SEATTLE — The Washington State Labor Council, M.L. King Jr. County Labor Council, Casa Latina, Washington State Alliance for Retired Americans, and Faith Action Network invite all to attend a candlelight vigil — one of dozens being held throughout the nation on Monday — urging Washington’s congressional delegation to say “no” to any cuts in benefits to Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, and to end tax cuts to the richest 2%. It will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Federal Building, 915 2nd Ave. in Seattle.
