Register for WSLC’s ‘Defend Democracy’ training on Nov. 1

When we wake up next Wednesday morning, Washington’s labor movement needs to know two things: 1) We did everything in our power to support the election of Joe Biden as President of the United States plus other pro-worker, pro-union candidates up and down the ballot, and 2) We’re ready for what comes next.

The Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO invites leaders, staffers and rank-and-file activists from all affiliated unions to attend the first in a series of trainings related to the election and beyond: “Defend Democracy: Protect Our Communities.” It will be held from 11 a.m.to noon this Sunday, Nov. 1 via Zoom video conferencing. Join WSLC President Larry Brown and WSLC Secretary Treasurer April Sims in preparing Washington’s labor movement to take action after the Nov. 3 election in the event of a Biden win, a Trump win, or the likely scenario of an election outcome that is delayed until the unusually high number of mail-in ballots are counted in the days following Election Day. Click here to register for this training.

All participants are encouraged to stick around after the one-hour Defend Democracy training on Sunday to join the Labor Neighbor FUN Bank from noon to 2 p.m. and call/text fellow union members to get out the vote for the candidates who have earned labor’s support. Register here for that FUN Bank and others between now and Nov. 3.

While Joe Biden has been waging a campaign to win this election, Donald Trump has been waging a campaign to defeat this election. The president and his army of lawyers have made it clear that they will fight to exclude as many votes as they can by making false claims of voter fraud and seeking to block the counting of valid mail-in ballots after Election Day. Trump and his lawyers are intent on silencing Americans and keeping us divided, so the labor movement must stand ready to make sure working people of all colors and backgrounds are heard — and that all of our votes are counted.

In preparation for Sunday’s training, make sure that you have taken the Defend Democracy Pledge, a WSLC survey where everyone has the opportunity become a Democracy Defender and receive alerts, training opportunities and invitations to take various forms of action to defend our democracy in the wake of this critical election.

For more information about Sunday’s training, email Ingrid Chapman or call her at 206-566-3067.
