WSLC’s Sims is Strickland’s guest to State of the Union

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 6, 2024) — Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (D-Wash., 10th) has announced that her guest to President Biden’s third State of the Union address is April Sims, President of the Washington State Labor Council (WSLC), AFL-CIO. The address will be on Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. Pacific time and can be live-streamed WH.gov/sotu.

“As the first African-American woman to serve as president of a state AFL-CIO labor council in the nation, April Sims is a history-making leader,” Strickland said. “I’m honored to have her join me for this year’s State of the Union as President Biden shares what has been accomplished for workers, and how we will continue to pursue economic security for all people.”

“I am deeply honored to join Congresswoman Strickland as her guest for the State of the Union address,” Sims said. “Since my days volunteering for her mayoral campaign in Tacoma, she has embodied true leadership and unwavering commitment to our community. I’m eager to hear President Biden’s vision for addressing wage, wealth, and racial inequality and plans to lift working families.”

April Sims was sworn in as President of the WSLC in January 2023. She is the first woman to be elected WSLC president and the first Black woman elected to the presidency of any AFL-CIO state federation. As president, she leads Washington’s biggest union organization, representing more than half a million members.

U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. She is whip for the Congressional Black Caucus, a member of the New Democrat Coalition, and one of the first Korean-American women elected to Congress.
