Kill the Cuts: Day of Action

Rallies to defend research, patients, and jobs will take place in over 30 cities across the U.S.

WASHINGTON (April 7, 2025) — On the heels of nationwide rallies and marches protesting the federal administration’s destruction, working people will take to the streets Tuesday to put pressure on elected representatives to fight back against the federal administration’s attacks on research, healthcare, and higher education.

Kill the Cuts, a national Day of Action, will call out Trump’s cuts to NIH, NSF, and the Department of Education for jeopardizing medical progress in areas like cancer, viral pandemics, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s. These attacks threaten the health of our communities; with thousands of research jobs hanging in the balance, cuts harm our economy, too.

The actions are planned by Higher Ed Labor United, a coalition of unions representing higher education and healthcare workers, including the United Auto Workers, American Federation of Teachers, and more.

In Washington, University of Washington faculty, staff, and community allies will rally Tuesday, April 8, at 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Montlake Triangle in Seattle’s University District, off Montlake Boulevard. Across the state, another rally is planned at Washington State University in Pullman at 12:00 p.m. (1500 Glenn Terrell Mall, Pullman, WA 99163.)

In announcing the Seattle rally, UAW Local 4121 connected the federal threats to critical funding with cuts currently proposed much closer to home in the State Legislature.

“Workers at UW are already experiencing the impacts of the Trump administration’s ongoing attacks on research funding, as well as Governor Ferguson’s proposed state budget cuts,” per the union. “These cuts are drastically changing the climate of our grant funding and job security, especially the security of our international scholars, some of whom are in the most vulnerable positions as a result of these changes.”
