SB 5041 has passed the Washington State Senate, but corporations are trying to kill the bill in the House
OLYMPIA, WA (March 14, 2025) — Labor is calling on supporters to take action in support of striking workers and advocate for SB 5041, which would allow workers to access unemployment benefits after the second Sunday on strike.
SB 5041 has a hearing in the House Labor & Workplace Standards Committee on Tuesday, March 18. Big business lobbyists and supporters are painting an apocalyptic picture, claiming this legislation will give low-wage workers the upper hand over the massive corporations that employ them. But anyone who has ever tried to organize a union, bargain a contract — or simply be treated respectfully at work — knows that doesn’t make any sense.
UI for striking workers is about leveling the playing field and preventing employers from weaponizing the economic insecurity of low wage workers to keep those workers from exercising their legal right to organize and collectively bargain. Ultimately, SB 5041 encourages good faith bargaining instead of playing games with people’s livelihoods, benefiting workers and employers alike.
With the federal governments’ attacks on workers’ rights, the NLRB, and basic civil liberties, state legislation to empower working people to secure better working conditions for ourselves is all the more important.
