STATE GOVERNMENT

Rally for the public good

OLYMPIA, WA (April 23, 2025) — Today educators, public workers, unionists, parents, concerned citizens and elected officials are gathering on the steps of the legislative building in Olympia to demand tax justice.

The rally is sponsored by Washington Education Association locals and AFT Washington.

Despite Washington being home to some of the wealthiest individuals and most profitable corporations of all time, the state is facing a budget shortfall. Due to our regressive tax system, school districts, higher education, social services, ecological protections, transit, housing, and an array of programs that protect people are constantly threatened.

With the final days of session full of budget negotiations, educators, health care providers, and community organizers are sounding the alarm, calling for bold action to tax the wealthiest among us rather than balance the budget on the backs of working families.

The rally will feature some education on labor and civil rights movements, urge folks to commit to vote for tax justice — and politicians who support righting our regressive tax system — and a march around the rotunda.

In the words of organizers: “Our democracy is not for sale.  When the people lead, the leaders follow.”
