MayWorks film contest winners announced

As part of its monthlong MayWorks celebration that concluded on Memorial Day weekend, the Washington State Labor Council conducted a You Tube film competition with the theme of “work” or “we do the work.” The three winning 3- to 5-minute films were shown at the SIFF Theater as part of the Northwest Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center and the top three filmmakers won prizes $250, $150 and $100, respectively.

The winning films were:

FIRST PLACE: “We Do the (Wig) Work” submitted by Dennis Milam Bensie, Theatrical Wardrobe Union (IATSE) Local 887.

SECOND PLACE: “StageHands IATSE Local 15” was submitted by Local 15 member Rob Hursh.  It is posted here. (Sorry, we can’t embed this QuickTime video at The Stand.)

THIRD PLACE: “Thurston Lewis Mason CLC” was submitted by Connie Mac. (Sorry again. This video is no longer posted online.)

HONORABLE MENTION: “Postal Packin’ Mama” submitted and performed by Carol Mesford, a 32-year Tacoma letter carrier (and NALC Branch 130 member), drawing attention to the plight of America’s Postal Service.

The film competition was part of the WSLC’s MayWorks celebration. At its 2011 Convention, WSLC delegates approved a resolution calling for the WSLC to create a month-long celebration of workers’ culture in May 2012 to honor of the 100-year anniversary of the Lawrence, Mass., textile strike — the “Bread and Roses” strike.
