ELECTION
Labor Neighbor: Focus shifts from walks to phones
(Oct. 23) — More than 600 union members across Washington state took to the streets on Oct. 20 to visit fellow members and talk with them about union-endorsed candidates in the Labor Neighbor program’s final Super Walk of the 2012 election season. After that tremendous volunteer turnout, the focus now shifts to the phone banks needed to reach the union households that still need to be contacted about labor-endorsed candidates.
“If we can fill all of our phone banks from now until election day, we may be able to reach 100 percent of union households we need to reach,” said Lori Province, Field Mobilization Director for the Washington State Labor Council, which runs the Labor Neighbor member-to-member grassroots political program. “That would be an amazing outcome and demonstrate the labor movement’s commitment to electing candidates who will champion strong working families, a secure middle class, and a better world for our children.”
VOLUNTEER! See the Labor Neighbor calendar for a list of all of the phone bank opportunities in your area. But remember, phone bank volunteers can call from anywhere. If you have a computer and phone available at your office/home, you can participate in phone banking remotely via a virtual predictive dialing system. Click here to RSVP to volunteer, or contact Lori Province for more information via email or at 206-351-2956.
Check out video coverage of Saturday’s Super Walk in Renton:
Super Walks were also held Oct. 20 in Everett, Silverdale, Spokane and Vancouver.
In Silverdale, 6th Congressional District candidate Derek Kilmer stopped by to thank the dozens of volunteers who turned out. There were enough Super Walkers to contact every single union household targeted in the Bremerton/Silverdale area.
Likewise, labor’s endorsed 1st CD candidate Suzan DelBene visited with union volunteers at Saturday’s walk in Everett, as did several state legislative candidates at all five Super Walk locations.
Again, the effort now shifts to the phone banks, please look at the Labor Neighbor calendar and RSVP for a shift (or two). Thank you!
