Engineers at Boeing’s Miami facility join SPEEA

The following is from the the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), IFPTE Local 2001:

SEATTLE (Nov. 18, 2013) — Engineers at The Boeing Company’s Flight Services Miami are now members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), IFPTE Local 2001.

SPEEA-12Votes in the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election were counted Friday at the Seattle Regional Office. Engineers at the expanding Miami facility work closely with engineers at Boeing’s Puget Sound locations.

“These employees asked for our help and we are pleased to help them gain the voice at work they need and deserve,” said SPEEA President Tom McCarty.

The two engineers at the facility join more than 15,600 engineers in the SPEEA Professional Unit. By joining the existing bargaining unit, the vote expands the unit’s geographical reach, easing the path for aerospace engineers in other parts of the country to organize and gain the benefits of professional union representation with SPEEA.

SPEEA filed the petition for the employee vote with the NLRB Region 19 office Sept. 13. The filing followed the union’s 140-member governing council’s unanimous vote in favor of the employees’ request to join the SPEEA Professional Unit.

“The expertise these employees have is critical to The Boeing Company,” said Ray Goforth, SPEEA executive director. “We welcome them into the SPEEA family.”

In recent months, SPEEA is increasingly being contacted by aerospace employees from around the country who are looking to secure the benefits and protections provided by union representation.

A local of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), SPEEA represents 25,630 aerospace engineers, technical workers, pilots and professionals at Spirit and Boeing in Washington, Kansas, Oregon, California and Florida; and at Triumph Composite Systems, Inc., in Spokane, Washington.
